Weatherization Field LabIn this field lab you will have the opportunity to join Professional Home Inspection Institute's experienced instructors and other course participants for a hands-on experience in the field. This field training will allow you to apply the skills you've gained in PHII's energy auditing and weatherization course. Among other things, you will personally install a blower door and measure building tightness. The field lab will also include using a thermal imaging camera to identify gaps in insulation, air leaks, and test furnaces and ducts in the home.

This training is optional and is conducted at our training facility in Madison, South Dakota. For information about making travel arrangements, see below.

PHII students who have successfully passed the course material in or enrolled in the Certified Weatherization Contractor or Certified Energy Auditor packages are provided access to this field lab free of charge. 

Experienced Instructors

Larry Malcolmb
With over 25 years of experience in the weatherization industry, Larry has a great deal of expertise. During his time in the field he has been involved with numerous weatherization projects in both new home construction and existing residential homes. He is experienced with and can answer your questions concerning blower door testing, insulation remediation, HVAC analysis, diagnostic testing, mechanical ventilation, combustion appliance testing, and infrared cameras. Larry is very familiar with the codes that apply to new home construction and existing residential homes, with special regard to weatherization. Weatherization InstructorsHe helps bring that hands-on knowledge to the interactive online training programs as well as the on-site field labs offered by Professional Home Inspection Institute. Larry is available to do on-site training in Madison, SD and is also willing to travel to your location to hold a training seminar.

Roberta Anderson
For over seven years Roberta Anderson has been working with the local community action agency in the field of weatherization. She worked at a manufactured home factory for 8 years prior to her current work. Her extensive background with weatherization and manufactured housing has resulted in her status as a source of expert knowledge in weatherization methods and techniques for new and existing mobile homes - as well as stick-built residential homes. She is familiar with commonly-used weatherization practices for furnaces, leaky ducts, ventilation systems, and insulation in older homes and new construction. Roberta is available to perform on-site training in Madison, SD and is also willing to travel to your location to hold a training seminar.

Making Travel Arrangements to Madison, South Dakota

If you wish to travel to Madison, South Dakota to attend a training lab and live out of the area, we are available to help you plan the best method of travel, whether it be air or ground travel. Before you make permanent travel reservations, you may want to call us. We are familiar with the airlines, rental services and transportation options that service this area and we may be able to help you find the best routes to take or get the most economical fares.

Lodging
PHII has negotiated discount rates for our students at two hotels in the Madison, South Dakota area. The Super 8, located very close to our training facility, offers our students a discounted rate of $45 per night for one bedroom. The AMERICINN offers PHII students a room rate of $59.90 per night and offers a mini-suite for $10 extra or a family suite for $15 extra if you would like to bring your family and make it a vacation. In either case, just inform the hotel upon booking that you are with the Professional Home Inspection Institute.
